Help Us Make a Video About Why People Love the Outdoors!
People of all types and backgrounds are drawn to the outdoors. Whether it is a close-to-home adventure or a far-away journey, we have a strong desire to get outside and explore nature. We are making a video that explores why that is and we need your help! All you have to do is film a quick selfie video telling us why your love the outdoors and submit a photograph or video of yourself enjoying the outdoors. If we use any of your video, you’ll be paid $100 U.S. dollars.
Video submissions are due by 08/05/19.
Please email selfie videos to firstname.lastname@example.org. Include your full name, phone number, and PayPal email address (if applicable) in the email.
In your selfie video, respond to the following prompts:
Tell me why you love the outdoors. What is it that draws you outside and makes you want to explore nature (whether it be close to home or far away)?
Tell me about an outdoor experience that you’ll never forget. Tell me where it took place and why it was special. *This could be something lighthearted or meaningful and could be anything from a family camping trip to an epic backpacking adventure.
Why is getting outdoors so valuable? Why should anyone, no matter their race, gender, age, or size, try and get outside more?
Please also send a photo or video of yourself enjoying the outdoors. If you have a photo or video of the meaningful outdoor experience you shared, please send that!
*SAMPLE SELFIE VIDEO, PHOTOGRAPH, AND ANSWERS BELOW
Film with your cell phone horizontally (sideways), an arms length away from yourself.
Film during the day in an area with a lot of light. If at all possible, film outside in an area with limited ambient noise. *People who film outside are more likely to be chosen. If you absolutely cannot film outdoors, film inside in an area with a lot of natural light.
Avoid setting up backdrops.
Tips for Success (increase your chances of being chosen!):
Be authentic. No acting please.
People who share a photograph or video of themselves enjoying the outdoors are more likely to be selected, so do so if at all possible.
Email a downloadable video (please do not send via YouTube). Services such as Google Drive, WeTransfer, and DropBox allow you to send HD videos for free.

1.) Tell me why you love the outdoors. What is it that draws you outside and makes you want to explore nature (whether it be close to home or far away)?
Sometimes the city becomes too fast, loud, and cluttered for me. I love the outdoors because I love being in nature. There, I don’t have to be anywhere except right where I am. I need that 'here'-ness in my life.
I love the outdoors because it is a sensory feast! Seriously, get outside and show some love to your senses! The vistas, the sounds, the smells, even the way the air tastes… nothing compares to it. And every place has something different to offer.
Honestly, I hike and bike the local trails around my house because it’s a great butt workout. If I’m gonna put in the work to get in shape and look better, I’m not going to do it indoors. I get the best of both worlds this way. Yesterday I went on a hike and saw a raccoon. You won’t see that in a gym!
I love to challenge myself, to really push my mental and physical limits and there is no better way to do than while exploring the great outdoors. I particularly like difficult hikes in beautiful country. My favorite is climbing the backside of Mount Timpanogos.
I don’t really do religion or church… but I do consider myself a spiritual person, and no experience is as spiritual as getting outdoors. Rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, river rafting, sleeping out under the stars, whatever it is… nothing connects me better to the world, the people I am with, or my own thoughts as connecting with nature.
2.) Tell me about an outdoor experience that you’ll never forget. Tell me where it took place and why it was special. *This could be something lighthearted or meaningful and anything from a family camping trip to an epic backpacking adventure.
I’ll never forget the family camping trip I took with my dad in the Angeles National Forest. I was only 8 years old and he taught me all about pitching a tent, starting a fire, and of course, making the perfect s’more. Though he’s gone now, the passion for the outdoors he instilled in me is something I’ll always have… and something that continues to drive me to spend time in nature.
I remember my first winter break of college, hiking the Appalachian Trail with my best friend. It was the hardest thing we'd ever done. Seriously, it kicked our butts. We weren’t as prepared as we thought… but we did it. The experience sealed our friendship in a really special way.
My mom loves hammocks, so we went hammock camping up American Fork Canyon. In the middle of the night, mom started screaming. I thought a bear was in our camp. Nope, mom just fell out of her hammock. I nearly died laughing. I’ll never forget that.
A year before I retired, I convinced my wife to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro with me. We put in months of preparation and it still didn’t feel like enough when we were actually climbing. But you know what… we did it. And it made us feel like we could do anything. I will never forget that. We are already planning the next adventure.
3.) Why is getting outdoors important? Why should anyone, no matter their race, gender, age, or size, try and get outside more?
I didn’t grow up hiking or camping. That’s something I found with my friends in college and then continued when I got married and had kids. I have yet to find a better way to bond than to share an experience outdoors. And the good news is it cheap or free and anyone can do it and enjoy it. And they should do it, because it brings you together and invites you to just be present with the people you care about. That is amazing.
Getting outside is important because it reminds you that life is a lot bigger than just you. The worlds a big place and somehow we’re all connected. It doesn’t matter who you are, your age, or race, gender… if you want to learn something about yourself and your place in the world, if you want to change your perspective, get outdoors.
The earth is beautiful and everyone should explore and experience it. You don’t have to be rich or experienced, you don’t have to be young or athletic, everyone can and should get outside and enjoy nature… Why? Because it’s there, it’s great exercise, it’s therapeutic, and it’s a great excuse to slow down and smell the roses or wild flowers, whatever you find.
